This week’s before and after comes to you from Candace, who recently moved back to her home of Northern Virginia. Since moving back, she’s been tackling projects at home and for her sister. This week’s story is a great one – a chalk paint addict and saving a piece of furniture passed down through the family. Take it away, Candace!
“I was last featured on Stylish Patina for a dresser upcycle project that I did in Henderson, Nevada. I have since moved back to Northern Virginia and am so happy to be home! I am the wife of a family medical resident (three years to go!) I have two sons – a kindergartener and a first grader and a 18-month-old baby girl named Rainey.
One of the many perks of moving back home is that I am (finally) able to work with my sisters on projects around their house! I have been wanting to get my hands on this table that my sister inherited but didn’t have time when I would come home to visit from Vegas on short trips with all the kids in tow. Now that the kids are back in school and we have gotten settled in our new home, I convinced my sister that it was time to tackle the table.”

“While the table didn’t look bad before, what you can’t see in the photo is that the finish on the top had become very sticky, and if you put papers on it, or even your hand, it felt like a layer of breakfast syrup needed to be cleaned,” said Candace.
“My sister was ready to throw it away and buy a new table, but I convinced her we could save it! We started by sanding it down to take off the sticky finish, and got it down to a nice wood. I then did 2 coats of ASCP Graphite and then a coat of clear wax and a coat of dark wax. I also distressed the edges to add dimension and tie in the color of the pedestal base,” said Candace.

“The table turned out fabulous and is a perfect complement to her kitchen that is finished with cherry wood cabinets and a smoky black granite top. As her husband said when he got home from work and was shocked by the outcome.” we took this table from zero to hero!” It is also so fun to be able to salvage a piece of furniture from the family line. I think it has a few more years left in it now,” said Candace.
We agree, Candace! So awesome that you were able to save your sister’s table and keep it in the family. Amazing what a little chalk paint can do.
