Today I wanted to share a little before-and-after of a piece we have in this month's Rough Luxe Market (RLM), June 26-28th. I bought this vintage wash basin a month or so ago and never got around to breathing new life into it. I kept thinking someone would buy it and see the potential I saw. I was hoping it would be purchased by someone who would paint it a lively color for a patio or even could be cute in a kids room or a make shift bar.
No one saw the vision so she was painted in preparation for this month's RLM. The theme is “off to the lake +vintage Americana,” so I decided to paint her something neutral so that she could be used in many homes/spaces (something you have to think about when you sell furniture:-). The girls and I decided on old white chalk paint®. Sarah painted her up last Monday and I came in this Monday and was going around distressing pieces we had painted last week and just felt this guy needed a little more dimension. I ended up using a wash of French Linen chalk paint over top to just give it a bit more interest. I also popped on this colorful knob for fun. Now he/she is done and ready for many a porch party, kids' room or man cave.
How do you apply a wash, you ask? It’s easy: just water down the chalk paint super thin, apply the paint over the piece, and then wipe off the excess paint while it is wet. This is truly a creative process and you have to you work with it and meld the paint to get the look you are wanting. Conceptually, it’s an easy technique but takes a bit of practice.
