I decided to do another GIVEAWAY out of my own pocket to increase awareness about the Old Fashioned Milk Paint line called SAFE PAINT. On the label it says it’s for walls…don’t be alarmed, it works on all of your shiny furniture too without using a binding agent (most of the time). I don’t like to say things work all the time because there is always an exception so test a small area if you are nervous.
I played with SAFE PAINT myself on this dresser (see the before & after pictures below). I did not prime, sand, or use a bonding agent. I just mixed up safe paint in Sea Green (2 coats) and finished it with Annie Sloan Wax on top and Van's beeswax on the front and sides of the dresser. I LOVE how it turned out, and it sold in a week, so I guess someone else liked it too!
ALSO the color is a bit more consistent with the SAFE PAINT vs the traditional milk paint can be more streaky but cool if you are open to experimenting. Basically it’s a more user-friendly version of the original milk paint formula. And for those of us who are Chalk Paint™ by Annie Sloan converts (let's be honest, ADDICTS!) I think it might be the best Milk Paint option out there. It gives us a bit more control over the outcome but with all the milk paint benefits.
You can now buy SAFE PAINT from Stylish Patina (SP) at Stifel & Capra in Falls Church and Online starting next week (just have to add the products to the shopping cart!).
PROS of SAFE PAINT by Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company (OFMP)
- No VOC
- All natural
- It sticks to walls, slick furniture, metal, etc., usually without any bonding agent
- Comes in all the same fabulous OFMP colors
- And is the same price!
- Dries fast
- Distresses well
- VERY durable
- More consistent color
CONS
- You still have to mix it
- And I think for a nice finish it does require a top coat, whereas with Chalk Paint™ you can get away with just burnishing the paint and not always having to use a top coat.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Q) How is the new SafePaint different from your Old Fashioned Milk Paint?
A) SafePaint is a newly formulated milk paint designed for use on walls. Our original formula was created for porous surfaces like wood and masonry. SafePaint was formulated for use on non-porous surfaces such as previously painted walls and for new sheetrock. It will also adhere to other surfaces such as metal or previously finished wood, cabinetry, furniture, etc. And you can certainly use it on porous surfaces like bare wood as well.
Q) Is SafePaint mixed up the same way?
A) Yes, but more easily, especially at higher speeds with a drill paint paddle or a portable kitchen beater. Basically, you still just add water and mix.
Q) What colors does SafePaint come in?
A) SafePaint is available in all twenty colors of our existing palette of Milk Paint, as well as a “Base” with no pigment for those wishing to add their own pigments. And just like our original formula, SafePaint colors may be blended together to create other colors.
Q) What are the SafePaint prices?
A) The same as our traditional Old Fashioned Milk Paint.
Q) Is SafePaint different in appearance than your traditional milk paint?
A) Yes, it doesn’t have the “old world”, uneven, mottled look of our original formula. It’s flat, but much more uniform and consistent over a large area.
Q) Is SafePaint washable?
A) It is more water-resistant than our original paint, but on surfaces expected to take a lot of abuse, you may want to put a clear sealer over the paint. SafePaint is washable once cured.
Q) Is SafePaint a true milk paint like your Old-Fashioned Milk Paint?
A) Yes, it’s as real and true as it gets. A true Milk Paint contains milk protein, lime, and pigment.
Q) Does the name SafePaint mean that it is SAFER than your Old-Fashioned Milk Paint?
A) Our Old-Fashioned Milk Paint and our SafePaint are both organic and biodegradable as well as permanent, durable, and nonpolluting. They are both the safest paints available.
